JooVuu X Modified Firmware MODs Archive

Thanks for the JVX 28CB Beta footage, was important for me to get these to confirm Bitrate works and MP4 tag embeds. The 29.9fps has zero effect on IQ quality and normal for different cameras. Since I don't own this X suggest you record in highest resolution whatever that is, want to avoid using interpolated resolutions that wreck IQ. The Sharp4 looks good possibly improved. Really need bright blue sky and some parking lot video. Also need to see extreme Sharp levels so Sharp1 & Sharp5, even parking in front of house pointing at building across street will help and easier to record all 5 sharpness levels. I have 4TB of storage for DCTeam Test footage so 3min clips mean nothing but for others 1-2min clip Looping is best.
What you've shared helps enough to advance the adjustments, great work. Should have another sharpness MOD later today.

The weather is going to be pretty awful over the next few days and the chances of blue skies are zero lol

I only opted for the 1080p30 resolution as that produces the best night and day footage but I see your point and have changed to 2560 for future clips. I'll get some more footage of sharpness 3 & 4 on the higher resolution driving around and will do clips of all sharpness levels from the front garden and will post the results.

Thanks as always BCHobbyist (y)

Sorry to hear about your family illness. My thoughts are with you

Thank you, it's highly appreciated.

I will keep following this thread, as it does interest me a lot.

Too bad the firmware is not open source. The short time that the JVX was on my windshield, it produced the best quality 1080 video out of all cameras I had (high bitrate firmware.) Ultimately it came down to support (or the lack of) and a horrible mobile app.

Second that. The higher bitrate fw's indeed produced better quality, which made the blocking and flashing significant less, but the "stop/start" issue became more severe, especually when sd card was full and looping began.... Very annoying....

There's something about the X that sticks to me, like the Mobius does to many of us. For example, the X has a timed mode, which I can not find in any other dashcam... I miss that a lot... However my Viofo A119S performs excellent in all conditions, so one could argue "... in that case, what do you care?" and one would be correct. Still...

I've managed to record some clips parked in the garden all at the highest resolution. No idea what has happened to 5 :ROFLMAO:

Really hope we can improve the X sharpness, its not acceptable. These clips reveal many issues including graininess on Sharp6 level. thanks for taking the time to record and share this test footage, it gave me an idea.

Created new JooVuu X - Beta version 28CC , See top of Post #1 of thread for details and ChangeLog.
Request RAW footage & feedback on all Sharpness levels under all lighting conditions.

Is there a reason why you are providing these mods for a 3 years old camera? Don't get me wrong, I like it, but I'm a bit puzzled as to the question why...

Is the mod tackling the flashing, blocking and stop/start issues too? Otherwise I can't see the benefit I'm afraid ....

What if I install, can I go back to stick afterwards?

I think it was basically because someone that didn't have the skills to do it themselves asked, and he was kind enough to oblige

there are limits to what can be done with a hex editor without access to the source code

What if I install, can I go back to stick afterwards?

rolling back to earlier firmwares is always an option on this platform

I understand that, as Ambarella isn't very open source...

so... I guess, no?

No harm in trying then... maybe I'll give it a go after all...

firmware_JVX_MOD-28CC_28Mbps+SharpC+DCTeam.bin

renamed to firmware.bin, copied to SD card, did update, but how do I know if it succeeded? Where can I check the camera's FW/version?

Schermopname (1751).png

does 25mb/s so I guess that's the high bitrate setting for this one?

Then it should be a successfull flash, since I had the original stock version @18mb/s....

Here's what the app says about FW version:

Interesting comment, after only 4 days my efforts to improve an abandoned Dashcam I'm already being bashed??
Expecting all the JooVuu X faults to be fixed in 4 days is not only unrealistic but very high-handed.
Now I see why no one has spent time attempting to improve this brand.
Your comments are appreicated but it won't stop me from creating more modified firmware for owners that requested my help.

BCHobbyist Modified Firmware always embeds MOD-ID Tag into MP4 video metadata. This enables RAW test footage MOD version verification during firmware development. There are 4 places to insert DCTeam ID tag in JooVuuX, currently using the least obvious location but can be shifted as desired. I expect this type of FW identification will slowly become adopted by Manufacturers and Vendors. I use it specifically to track differences between the 100's of test clips viewed during IQ assessments.

Some IQ issues can be solved by changing Menu settings.
Flashing or auto brightening can result from DVR adjusting to either dark scene or bright object - toggling HDR on or off may reduce that effect.
DVR turning off then on or restarting could be over heated microSD card or loose in slot - try different memory card that is heat resistant. When using high Bitrate MODs which create large MP4 files its best to use memory card with faster than 20MB/s write speed. Cards with 60-90MB/s Write speed may help reduce random crashes or prevent file corruption, just a suggestion.

I don't own this Dashcam so can't witness the issues directly. Troubleshooting device and firmware takes time, it would help to know if these issues occur in all official FW versions for all owners.

I have really no idea why you think I'm bashing you, cause I'm not! I'm afraid you misunderstood, and I'm sorry if you feel that way, because I'm sincerely happy to see you pick this up!

The thing is that we've seen other mods and fw's from manufacturer and 3rd.parties that didn't tackle the issues I mentioned, and I was just hoping you actually could.

So please don't be offended, I just wondered and hoped.... That's all my friend (is that ok?)!

I think perhaps you misunderstood what @dirkzelf was saying. From what I've seen the JVX already has decent IQ, although improving it is no bad thing. Where the JVX has struggled over the years is reliability and lack of support. I was going to say more, but I see he's already replied! I'd echo the sentiment that any camera, especially a dashcam, needs to be reliable first and foremost, before addressing any IQ improvements.
