Poor front video quality when using front and rear camera

It is strange indeed, these cameras are fixed focus, so for the image to go out of focus its most often a mechanical failure due to heat with the lens or the mount of the lens.

Some cameras ( action ) do have a option to lower or raise sharpness, not sure if connection of the rear camera trigger that in some way, and still i have never seen footage with sharpness set to very low, but there are quite a few cameras that can or have a sharpness that are higher than i would like to see.
my first real dashcam the Lukas LK-7500 was one such camera, so when i got a replacement camera that was softer on the image it took some adjusting to look at as i had been looking at the "hard" sharpness footage of the lukas for over a year, so it was the norm for my eyes so to say.

I am contemplating on my drive after my imminent bath, to try and unplug the rear camera of my SG9663DC camera to see if that make any change for the front camera.

To me this behavior of this Nextbase camera are something new i have not seen before in dual channel cameras.

Drop in resolution shouldent really effect image sharpness.

As I mentioned earlier I believe what is going on here is a drop in the bitrate of the video. The bitrate of the front camera without he rear attached was higher than when the rear camera is attached. Here are two comparison shots - the first is just the from camera on its own, the second is the front camera when the rear camera is also attached.

You can clearly see that the second image has a noticeable drop in quality - e.g. look at the detail in the wall for example.

I have been told that this may be an issue with the memory cards so Nextbase have sent me one to try. I must admit I am sceptical about this and fear this is an issue by design.

Let me know how the rest of you get on.

I've just tried swapping the memory card to a Samsung 64Gb but the light level is dropping so the results are inconclusive. I will hopefully try again either tomorrow or Sunday.

I dont think its bitrate, that should be fine as long as there are no movement in the footage.

Most of my CCTV cameras run 4 mbit as nothing happen in the image, and they are all as crisp as 1080p footage get.

My X camera i run with a modified firmware at 40 mbit, thanks to VBR at night it drop to 10 mbit or so, and file size from almost 1000 MB to 280 / 300 MB

Looks to me that you need to adjust your polarising lens as you can see the reflection of your dashboard. Not sure if it would make much difference to your main problem though.........

Hi folks,

Just to provide an update - Nextbase sent out a microSD card to try and unfortunately it has not fixed the issue. See before and after shots below. The first is without rear camera attached and second is with:

Without rear camera (notice detail in the bricks and number plates off to the side):

With rear camera attached (much softer and loss of detail in bricks, cars to the side and foliage):

The file sizes are also smaller on the front camera when the rear is attached. This makes me think there is definitely something going on here.

Perhaps Tiffany can suggest next steps?

Let me know how the rest of you are getting on.

Thanks

Nope no edit - I only cut the location details at the bottom.

ok, so they are edited, I was wondering why they weren't full res, looks like the aspect ratio was different between the two images but that may be as a result of you trimming the pictures

I thought you meant in terms of colour etc.

I have just cut off the bottom a that doesn’t alter the fact that the image is poorer when the camera is attached.

there's a slight difference but that is probably just the difference in bitrate I would think

I think so too - the problem is that it does have a perceptible difference on things like number plates. Maybe it is something that can be fixed via firmware?

I also tried with a different memory card at the weekend and it made no difference. I have trouble discerning number plates unless the car is stationary and right in front of my car. I have to say that the quality is much better on the wife’s 412gw. As a test I had both cameras mounted on the windscreen and compared the difference. A lot sharper on the 412gw and that was with both cameras set at 1080p

That’s exactly the same with me - it’s difficult to make out number plates unless stationary and very close in front. Didn’t used to be like this until the rear cam.

Still waiting on a response from Nextbase so will see what happens.

I emailed Support last week about it. Not heard anything yet but I’m sure they will get round to it.

In some ways it’s good to see that others are having this issue as the more that highlight it, hopefully the more they can fix it.

I suspect that everybody with the rear cam now 'has the issue' but fewer actually notice it or come here to comment on it.

Yes I would think so too - hopefully they can issue a fix!

I sent my 512gw back to amazon for a replacement because I thought the camera was producing soft images when the rear camera was connected. Also there was a darker area to the top right of the image. I've now got the replacement 512GW and will report back soon.
