The list of shame fake 4K dash cameras Ultra HD

Just took the new "8K" dashcam for a spin. The video quality is pretty abysmal. Looking at the video details, it makes sense why. It's 1440p25 video at just under 7 Mb/s, lol. This is with a 1CH configuration in case it performs better this way than the 2CH setup.

Edit: Looking in VLC (which gives me a more variable bitrate while playing) instead of Quicktime (which shows a fixed bitrate for a clip), I'm seeing a bitrate ~9.2Mb/s like @Agie shared. Either way, the video quality itself is pretty potato'ey. Way worse than I'd expect from other IMX335 dashcams.

Edit 2: So for context I'm doing a quick comparison with the 8K Ace Pro and lol wow. So that's recording at 7680x4320 @ 24fps. The bitrate is ~170 Mb/s reported in Quicktime, or ~165-170Mb/s in VLC. File sizes are closer to 1.3 GB/min instead of 70 MB/min, haha. Frame rates are very similar at 25 vs 24 fps, but the resolutions, bitrates, and resulting file sizes are way different.

Cripes that's shocking!

This factoid was previously mentioned on Saturday by @Agie but I had known that already from a basic internet search, as it seems to be widely reported if you look for the info. I guess that's why I questioned why you were going to purchase one of these gems in the first place.

Anyways, looks like it's a 2560x1440 resolution dashcam at 25fps LOL. Not holding my breath that that's native either haha 😉

lol, yes I'm aware of his screenshot and was confirming parts of what he shared, though you'll note the bitrate that I'm seeing (~7 Mb/s) is lower from the bitrate from his screenshot (over 9 Mb/s) so things do vary. (Edit: Just discovered some variances with that depending on which software I'm using too and I updated the previous post.) I've also got a bunch of sample footage I'm rummaging through at the moment against 4K dashcams and the 8K Ace Pro, plus I want to compare it to some other 2K dashcams as well, but I'll probably move all that to another thread once I put the pieces together. If everything I wanted to know and discover about it was available in an internet search, then you could argue there is no real reason for me to purchase one of these, but even if that was case, I always like to have first hand testing, experience, and sample footage to share whenever doing any sort of PSA type video. 🙂

On a related note, I've always appreciated having other people who are also testing stuff at the same time. For example, we can all doublecheck each other's work, we test different things, we drive in different areas, we toy with different settings, and we often wind up discovering things that someone else may not have noticed. It's a collective team effort. Personally I've never been in the camp of "well someone else already tried it so why should I bother?" If anything, the more datapoints we have, the better idea we get of the big picture.

Thanks for taking the dive for us Ariel! That bitrate makes me cringe so badly haha. Can't wait to see the sample videos too for extra laughs!

Just finished the fake 8K dashcam video today, and wow I was surprised how much longer it takes to render an 8K video compared to a 4K one, lol. Performance-wise, that dashcam is even worse than I expected which made things pretty amusing. It's already boxed up to go back to Amazon, but you can go ahead and check out the video here.

Here's the dedicated thread for that dashcam:

The company I work for just release the first dash camera and I'm not particular familiar with the dash cam in general.

I was wondering if it's fake 4K because in the description it says "2160 UHD".

The UHD specification has 2160 pixels vertical height, so that might be supposed to indicate that it is real 4K, however it is very unusual to write "2160 UHD", which maybe indicates that it is fake.

Need more information before making any judgement...
Main question is which image sensor it uses, because that gives us the real resolution.

Thank you.

I checked the image sensor and it said "GC4653 4MP CMOS". So based on the original post, instead of 8MP, 4MP equals to fake 4K, right?
I checked the other specs too and they looked fine. Resolution 3840*2160P, frame rate 30fps.

Fake 4k definitely, galaxy core is a pretty poor sensor too

Yes, 4MP is half the detail of 8MP, but when you try to scale the image up to 8MP, it is not a simple 1 to 2 scaling, because it is a two dimensional image, not one dimensional, so all the pixels get a little blurred as well. The GC4653 is a Chinese developed sensor, OK for cheaper 2K dashcams, not the same image quality as Sony sensors. If you only ever watch your video on your "HD Ready" TV, or on a cheap small phone screen, then you might not be able to see the difference, but it is going to be a long way off real 4K.

Appreciate it.

I get the idea. The bigger and better the screen is, the more obvious it will be than a real 4K. Sad🙁

Well, that "screenshot of license plate" is clearly a complete fake. Even an 8k narrow field camera isn't going to show a license plate that clearly at 50m, as indicated by the field of view. This is one of the problems I'm discovering with the TypeS cameras I just bought from costco. They look nice when just reviewing footage, but then when I need to read a license plate or see any DETAILS it becomes painfully clear that the HVEC compression kills everything. Even at the last frame where a plate is visible in oncoming traffic, they're unreadable! I'm getting sick and tired of being suckered by these dashcam makers.

Returning a 70mai A810 4K Dash Cam. It is 2K, not 4K. The only choices in video setup are 1920x1080 or 1920x1080 (60FPS) both of which are 2K.

Yes. Not only is it lies lies and damn lies, but it MISSES 1-3 seconds between files, or nothing is recorded at all, no audio, no video, no GPS data! Both of the typeS lies sold by costco do this. TypeS even replied to me at some point admitting to this problem. I don’t know why this isn’t huge news in the dash cam talk community.

I am hoping costco won’t be a jerk about the “90 days for cameras” because this barely qualifies as a camera. 🤬
