VIOFO's A119S

defocus is on the entire video, and when heated it is more pronounced. Watch the video.

Looking at the bricks, while it is not a very sharp image, I think that could be typical, and I don't have reason to think it is out of focus.

I have a lot of wildlife cameras, and the images just look like that.

I agree. If there are any material flaws, dirt, dust, in or on the windshield, filter or lens it will appear continuously in all videos.

I agree and why not settle for less as it gets faster or darker

Do you not see the difference ?

On high voltage masts clearly visible if there is no focus.

Looks fine to me considering this is a dashcam not a movie cam which is designed primarily for close up collisions

Its ok to be pedantic in the wide field of view but again........... This is a dashboard camera designed for close up

It's not an excuse, if you have optics it must be configured ! For example , put on sunglasses not +1 as you need, and -1 ??? we'll see , but how ? Why I'm fine ?

or do You all have bad sharpness ?

There may be a detectable difference between the right and left side, but barely. The entire image is soft. That is just how the cameras are. Same as my $150 Moultrie game cameras. It is why I picked the A119 - I did screen captures from YouTube comparisons, loaded them in Photoshop, zoomed in, and I saw that the A119 had significantly more image resolving power day and night (in spite of the reviews saying the A119S was better at night, I didt not draw the same conclusion). Since I want to read license plates, I went with clarity over color quality.

This is a fair point. It is possible that I am being a little too picky and my expectations are unreasonable.

Even with the A119's wider field of view, you still found that it had an advantage when it comes to clarity and reading plates?

@Smoke Pants
It's best to test for focus while the car is stationary. A good test for focus is to go to a parking lot and park about 15-20 feet away from a row of cars. Make sure the lighting is the same on all the cars (no shadows). Viewing the cars and plates, left to right, should determine if your camera is out on one side.

Yes. I specifically looked for that. It was both wider *and* the same plate at the same distance was more readable. Note that the A119 was at 1440P and the A119S was at 1080P. I am not sure what would happen if they were both at 1080P.

Agree,as far as we know, the default focus on dashcam from manufacturer about 5 meters.

No 60fps, 119S / 30 fps.

I did the parking lot test. The right side is slightly out of focus when the camera just turned on, but the difference is barely noticeable:

But after it is running for a couple hours, almost the whole picture loses focus:

The A119S has a plastic lens housing, right? Please correct me if I am wrong. If I am right, can anyone please suggest a 60fps camera that maintains its focus, even under heat? Thanks.

60 кадров в секунду не поможет в этой проблеме, это физика.
Street Guardian releases cameras without problems with focus, because they install the metal holder.

Unfortunately, your parking lot picture is very dark and difficult to see any difference. Might want to point your lens down one click to catch a little less sky.
Are you moving in the second picture? That could explain why the whole picture looks more out of focus verses the first picture.

I’m going to make a couple of comments about lens and heat and leave it there and move on.
Prior to going into business for myself I was a tech specialist for over 14 years with Bell & Howell and Xerox.
Testing lens accuracy:
In order to conduct a proper lens test you need a uniform format and equal lighting from side to side and top to bottom.Any other method is not reliable or credible.

Heat, effects on lens, metal, plastics, etc.
The B&H microfilm machines had a very hot projection lamp in them and all the Xerox machines from the smallest copiers to the largest engineering products had a hot fuser to melt the toner on the paper. I also serviced equipment in steel and glass factories which were as hot and dirty an environment you could find.

All of the equipment had moving parts and was made up of lens, metal, plastic and rubber materials. The only components I remember that were affected by the heat were rubber rollers or cracked belts, they would dry out and crack, metal bearings, sealed or unsealed would eventually have to be replaced. In the hot dirty environment the lens and mirrors would have to be cleaned but never replaced due to excessive heat.

We knew glass lens wouldn’t be affected unless was in the 300F range
Bakelite plastic was used for its heat resistant properties.
I've used my Viofo A119S every day for 7 weeks and it performs perfectly for me.
