I had a quick search on this forum but couldn't find what I wanted to know easily so hence the New Thread.

My question has come about because I was using a 32GB card and everytime the dashcam would start it would prompt to format the card.
The problem with this is it was only a single tone and a message on the screen.
Unfortunately for me the dashcam is on the other side of my driving position where I can't see this screen easily.

It got me thinking
Is there already a formula for how the space of these memory cards are used?
Does it really matter?

As a suggestion going forward if it doesn't exist yet
Say
30% of storage used for emergency type files
60% for general driving video
10% for parking with no damage detected.
And a space for the next file or 2 to be written

And when any of this folders reach their capacity the oldest is overwritten eg loops.

I checked the memory card and found this
A breakdown of the space used
  • The RO folder is using: ~27.2% (~8.7GB)
  • The Movie Folder less the parking and RO is using : ~60.9% (~19.5 GB
  • Total used: ~88.1% (~8.7+19.5=28.2 GB)
  • Free space: ~11.9% (~3.8 GB free space)
% Percentage of use of memory card used for various storage?
So would it be fair to assume that regardless of what size memory card you have in your dashcam that it will use a maximum of ~27.2%
And then overwrite what is in the RO folder?
The earliest file stamp in the RO folder is 26th of June 2025
The earliest in the main movie folder is 1st of July 2025

No other data is on the memory card.

ItemSize (GB)Percentage of 32 GB
RO Folder8.727.2%
Remainder Used19.560.9%
Last Folder (384 KB)~0.0004
Free Space3.811.9%
Parking Folder only used~0.0011%so has been ignored in this

I have seen Dynamic storage space for events in days past.
Also tested how big this was one night by pressing event button again and again throughout the night in front of the computer, but ill be damned if i can recall my results.

I do recall with that SG camera even if it saving multiple complete 3 minute files in each event save, i was not worried about loosing too much " regular " memory space, or event folder too small as it did get overwritten.

Of course one must always be careful to not generate too many false events, and of course use a suitable large memory card.

Systems generating small event files as dictated by a small pre buffer and subsequent few seconds of recording, must be able to save a hell of a lot events.

I started this thread so we have a focal point of all dashcams and how they manage their data.
I only listed the dashcams I have current data on but it can be expanded if others have repeatable results.

Some cameras have fixed allocations for video folders, others can be adjusted by the user within an available range to suit their preference or their mix of driving / parking durations.

Here's one example from the Vueroid S1 4K Infinite (copied from thread by @lufa6977)

The Vantrue S1 Pro Max allocates 70% for Normal video and 30% for Event recordings:

That's a cool feature which takes it to another level, allowing the user the ability to adjust memory storage allocation.

Vueroid S1 4K answers the question on storage memory use.

How do other manufacturers do it?

I'll create a table and place it in the first post with a breakdown of how the storage memory is handled.
The Vueroid S1 4K can be the first entry.

Even the simple Blueskysea B1W allowed the user to adjust the event folder allocation between 30-50%, from what I recall.

I fear you may spend a lot of time compiling a table that will not be of great use - assuming most dashcams have a sensible method of file handling, and microSD cards are cheap enough that customers can buy a large card and not worry about whether the RO folder takes up 10, 20 or 30% of the card.

Just my thoughts, others may have a different view.

- assuming most dashcams have a sensible method of file handling,

That's the point of this thread to find out.

I agree with you suggest common sense will be used but that doesn't always seem to get to the firmware release lol

I get prompted to format my micro sdcard even though nothing is wrong.

In this case the dashcam doesn't record until physical intervention which bypasses the format request.

So while having the option to configure it or the information of % of memory usage what happens when it reaches its limits?

It seems obvious it would just continue but in my case it didnt so what do other cameras do?

It would be helpful if the dashcam manufacturers would like to supply their official figures.

It will be a table of facts and another thing that potential buyers might like to know.

I like the fact the user can select a storage option that matches, or at least gets near to their daily drive and parking use.

I couldn't find the image @TonyM credited you posting.
I don't mind if you post the link to the image/article.

I did some more testing just a simple test.
I placed the viofo micro sd card still with its files on it, into a Vantrue unit and it didn't complain and just continued to work!

Interesting...I presume both have an ExFAT format?

Can the Vantrue do a live playback of the VIOFO files?

I wonder if the Vantrue did a silent format or restructured the folder arrangement then? How could the Vantrue otherwise write files to the SD if it did not find the correct folder arrangement?

I doubt it. Vantrue and Viofo have different folder structures.

I just realised who you were replying to! lol. It created its own structure but left the DCIM folder alone.
I did say it was a simple test.

Fair question but the files were still on the card when I was checking. It created its own folder structure.

I know the 70mai won't allow this. It will format the card if it doesn't see its directory structure.

I didn't try to play the files from the other dashcam. I imagine if you can get to the other folder then it might be able to.

Since I started this post I have done some more simple testing and found the Viofo 32GB card had about 5GB (from memory ) left on it.
The Vantrue just used what was left.
I later deleted some files from the DCIM folder and tried it again in the A329hdmi model.
Same result saying it needed to format the card every time the dashcam was started.

I replaced the card with another and after the first drive it started to prompt to format the card. This card was a 512GB Vantrue card. It should be fast enough etc.
You can bypass the prompt to format by pressing the menu button, but if you don't check on the next drive it will be prompting again and you have to press the button again.
If you don't see the notice you are going to be driving around without it recording which isn't ideal.

I asked Viofo and it was suggested it is a faulty micro cards slot!

"
Thanks for your reporting, I thought this maybe related to the memory card slot issue.

We have noticed this issues before, and optimized in the new A329S batch."

So it seems that the memory allocation isn't relevant to this particular issue but is a 'glitch' in the firmware/hardware of the A329HDMI unit I was supplied.

I'm still interested in how other dashcam companies break up their memory usage.
