I always refocus my cameras after seeing the results you guys had and so far have always improved it.

I think when the factories build these if they do focus by hand sometimes the worker only has time to get it good enough rather than what we class as perfect.

Looks like your front X2 was out a bit though. All part of the learning curve I guess - the DOD cameras I tried were a mixture too.

The best out of the box camera I've had so far was the A118 and I think Jokiin said these could be done by machine instead of hand.

Good work though and I still want an X2 :)

I've yet to see any that aren't done by eye, cameras with HDMI output are often done when complete, cameras without HDMI output and that use a lens that is remotely mounted and not mounted directly to the mainboard most often have the sensor board placed in a jig during the focus stage, the variation can come down to a few things, what focal length is chosen, the type/quality of lens and operator skill (or error)

Wasn't Niko running 1.10 or are you trying multiple versions?

Is that a metal lens mount I spot there?

That looks super sharp now you've moved the focal point a bit!

Razor :)
But still it should be that way before the camera is put in a box at the factory.
Havent put me off these cameras, i dont mind a little fine tuning, even if it is a new expensive "toy" ;) but ppl with less DIY skill or willingness to tamper with a new part might be put off

Good point - I'm guessing opening them up voids the warranty (never stops me these days) but they just need to get the QA guys to check them a little better - it's early days yet and there are lots of people happy with their cameras that are ever so slightly out compared to what we'd tweak them to!

I know Pier28 does lots of extra checks on the units he sells so you're in safe hands there

Yeah I definitely see why a HDMI output would be easier to focus!

It must be very difficult in 480i!

This camera will probably cost 400 or so dollars USD. These issues should not be happening. Sure there will be a few hiccups/lemons off the line but for QA models, one would think these would be spot on tack focused especially since these are done by hand...

I certainly hope the final production unit I receive with my hard earned money will have gone through better testing.

proberly just bad luck as they seem to be able to focus the rear cameras fine, and i assume they are done under same circumstances.

I have to admit i had the belief the lens module was tested plugged into some jig with HDMI output, but thiss offcourse can be problematic with a camera unit mounted on the Main PCB.

And working with this myself experimenting with IP / CCTV and action cameras i know its just a matter of turning the lens 10 degree and then its in focus.

Its hard to do by hand, i have done this with my C1, and allso experimenting with my mobius as i cant get either of them to work as webcams.
So i have to ajust a couple of degrees in segments, and then take SD out and preview footage on computer, trial and error, i normally focus on a pice of modeltrain rail or the power mesuring gear on the wall, both about 3 M from my seat in front of the computer.

And then verified by filming a sign on the street in front of my apartment, and the licenceplates on the cars parked in the yard witch is about 10 and 15 M avay ( using digital zoom to verify best possible focus )

Quite time consuming that way, but its that way or too blurred footage on my cameras.

Wow, I had been expecting it to be a little over half of that! At those prices, I'd want nothing less than 100% perfection out of the box and a 3 year warranty!

Remember the X2 has two Zoran CPU's and two Sensors. (not to mention the R & D costs that need to be made up for)
The equivalent, Two Panorama G + Hard Wire Battery Discharge Prevention = $474.85
I expect to have a X2 price worked out soon.

Yeah. i would be dammed if powerucc started to ship sub standart gear out the door, plenty of other factories can and do that :)

Regarding prize i for one think 400 dollars sound fair compared to 2 single cameras, and if they could squeeze the prize even lower that would just sweeten the deal.
But then again i would like a more stealthy design as i leave the camera in my car 24/7, and i must admit if i left 400 dollars in my car i would prefer them to be as hidden as possible :D

just to clarify, all products are put together by hand, engineering samples like these are generally put together by either engineers or the production manager, the production manager is the guy who documents the whole assembly process and works out what each person on the production line will do and how they are to do it as the product moves along the line, there's a general misconception (by buyers) that these first samples are going to be highest quality examples of the product, (I think the term hand samples, or engineering samples somehow gives it that spin) but the reality is that the people on the production line that have a single task to do and they do that same thing over and over ultimately does it a lot better so the attention to detail, QA etc is always better on the mass production versions
