What has happened ?

Not with this model, but a friend had/has an Aldi dashcam that was all black, bu the whole front panel (same size as yours) has gone bronze.

I have never seen that happen to the lens housing on a dashcam before? What has caused this discolouration? Heat from sun light over time? Strange

I think I've cracked it thanks to the spider web .

Assuming it's aluminium to get it black requires anodising , there's soft & hard anodising and soft is said to fade .

Makes sense , a car I know has black metal / aluminium tyre valves that turned bronze !

I love it when the penny drops .

Lense housing is definitely non ferrous non magnetic , aluminium / aluminium alloy .

I'd leave it like that. The camera seems to be in plain sight, so that bronze color isn't going to make it more conspicuous than it already is.
