Dashcam Viewer for Mac and Windows

Dashcam Viewer v2.6.7 Released for Mac and Windows

Dashcam Viewer v2.6.7 is now available for download from our website. This version adds a number of new features, fixes bugs, and updates support for DJI drones that are controlled via the DJI Go 4 App. (Drones have video cameras and GPS so they can be thought of as airborne dashcams ;-)

New Features:
  • You can now change color and size of vehicle map marker, or use the default marker icon.

  • DJI drone users: speed values are now smoothed. While it’s great that DJI conveniently logs the drone’s flight data into an SRT file, the speed of the drone is not written to the file and the latitude and longitude values are not stored in high precision. Dashcam Viewer uses the time-stamped lat/lon values to estimate the speed. The lack of precision means the speed varies somewhat wildly. This modification smooths out some of the unwanted variations.

  • Export GPX: Improved compatibility of GPX files with other programs such as Garmin BaseCamp.
  • Updated user’s manual.
Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed recently added bug in MINI 0805/0806S loader that would not show all the data points.
  • Fixed bug in which Map Type was not saved between runs of the program.
  • [Windows] Fixed bug when loading movie files >2GB from Viofo A119 dashcams
  • Added warning about commas or quotes in movie file paths when merging movies.

Dashcam Viewer v2.6.8 Released for Mac and Windows

Dashcam Viewer v2.6.8 is now available from our website. This version has the following new features and updates:

New Features:
  • You can now choose between PNG and JPG format when exporting the current movie frame to an image file. JPG format is 7x smaller than PNG, but slightly lossy.
  • [Mac version] When exporting a movie frame to JPG format, the GPS coordinates are embedded in the file’s EXIF information block. Many image viewing applications can automatically read this information and display it in a map. Still working on the Windows implementation.

New Camera Supports:

  • Added support for Polaroid PD-G55H
  • Added support for a new variation of the MINI 0805 (embedded GPS data)
Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed a bug that would prevent the unregistered version of Dashcam Viewer from merging two videos.

Dashcam Viewer v2.7.0 Released for Mac and Windows

Dashcam Viewer v2.7.0 is now available from our website. This version add a number of improvements to more effectively manage window positioning.

New Features:
  • The Map, Dashboard, Graph, and Control Center windows now float above the Main movie window. This allows you to maximize the size of Main window and overlay the ancillary windows on top. Previously, the ancillary windows would be hidden beneath the Main window. This change allows for more dynamic and efficient Dashcam Viewer window configurations.
  • When Dashcam Viewer is put to the background, the ancillary windows will hide. They will come back when DV is brought to the foreground.
  • The Map window can now be shrunk horizontally to a very small size.
  • The Dashboard window can be shrunk horizontally to show only the speedometer and not the other widgets.

Might it be possible to make a resizable Control Center window? Sometime I wish I could make it just a bit smaller.

Currently I can shrink it to this size, which is pretty small. You want to go smaller? Difficult to do unless I reduce font size.

Thanks for the reply @traveler. This is a little embarrassing, but I realize I meant to say Dashboard window. Can that be made to be dynamically resizable? Or another possibility might be the option to make it a vertical window rather than a horizontal one when desired. The idea would be to free up some screen real estate.

@Dashmellow - I like this idea alot! I'm moving it to the top of my ToDo list. Stay tuned.

Dashcam Viewer v2.7.1 Released for Mac and Windows

Dashcam Viewer v2.7.1 is now available from our website. This version adds support for a vertically-oriented Dashboard, among other changes listed below:

New Features:
  • @Dashmellow, this one is for you ;) You can now orient the Dashboard window vertically or horizontally to optimize your window configuration.
dcv_2-7-1_dashboard.jpg

Orient the Dashboard window vertically or horizontally using the Window menu option.
Previously, only horizontal mode was supported.
  • Increased max value in Distance graph from 200 to 400 distance units.
New Camera Supports:
Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed bug in which the window positions would not be remembered if the application was brought to the background and then back to the foreground.
  • Fixed bug in which .gpx or .dat files would be ignored when loading movie files of the same base name. For example, if a movie named 2017_08_20.MP4 were collocated with a corresponding 2017_08_20.GPX file, the GPX file would have been ignored. Now it will be loaded and paired with the movie. This was a recently introduced bug.

Thanks @traveler! I just downloaded it and took it for a spin. It's fantastic! Does exactly what I was hoping for. With two monitors I can have a full screen map on one monitor and ALL the other windows can be open and fit together nicely on the other monitor. The whole thing looks and works like a well integrated video viewer work station with no dead spots or overlap. Nice job!

How can I send you a zip file of the files on my Qvia AR790?

Dashcam Viewer v2.7.2 Released for Mac and Windows

Dashcam Viewer v2.7.2 is now available from our website. This version adds the following enhancements:

New Features:
  • Users can now compensate for dash cams that do not store their GPS data in UTC-relative time. Entering the correct UTC offset in the Preferences "Advanced" tab will apply the correction such that UTC timestamps will no longer be displayed in Local time when exporting to CSV or GPX files. This will not affect the timestamp at the top of the movie window but will affect the output of CSV, GPX, and KML files. In addition, you can now specify the Local Time offset from UTC when exporting data to CSV file.
  • Made Preferences window modal so multiple instances will not clutter the screen.
  • Improved load speed for NextBase 412G
  • Added more verbose explanations of GPS data processing errors (these explanations appear when the mouse is hovered over the wrench symbol in the Movies and Geotags window).
  • Added Chinese translation (thanks, @vhfyagi)

  • Improved to German translation
New Camera Supports:
  • Added GPS compatibility with Viofo G1W-S.

Yet, oddly, Dashcam Viewer is smooth as silk on my Win7 Ultimate x64 first-gen, 2007 i5 Dell Precision M4500 laptop, playing A119S 1080p@60fps that are hosted on a 1gbps network machine.
It does have an SSD system drive, but 'only' 8GB of RAM, CPU is i5 M520 2.4GHz. GPU is Nvidia Quadro FX880M.

DV will not run smoothly on the old clunker that hosts the dashcam files. That has the same W7U x64 OS and a Core2Quad 2.4GHz CPU, 8GB RAM, AMD Firepro 2270 GPU, but the system disk is a fairly slow HDD.

DV runs fine in spurts, slowing down and evidently emptying a buffer faster than it can refill it. This is cyclical, every few seconds. To me that it works fine every few seconds suggests that the machine can easily cope with decoding and display, but DV's video library is spooling data to a cache on disk. The first machine has SSD and copes fine, the stuttery one has a cruddy old Samsung HDD from about 2005, which does not. It's an old dogsbody that basically does NAS and backup server duties. I expect that if I gave it a system SSD it would run DV just fine.

EDIT: In fact I have a 3rd old W7U x64 machine of similar spec, only a 3.3GHz E6800 CoreDuo CPU 8GB RAM and SSD. I will do a test install on that and see how DV copes.

Nope, that one is dropping frames, and the bottleneck is CPU (only 2 cores) which is permanently stuck on 100%. The Dell Precision which manages fine is using ~70% of 4 cores.

Dashcam Viewer v2.7.3 Released for Mac and Windows

Dashcam Viewer v2.7.3 is now available from our website. This version adds the following enhancements:

New Features:
  • Added a new Preference to control whether ancillary ‘Windows Stay On Top’ of the Main Window. Setting this checkbox off will revert Dashcam Viewer to the way windows were managed in versions prior to v2.7.0. This mode may be preferred for Surface tablet PCs. Please quit and restart Dashcam Viewer after making a change to this setting. (Thanks Thomas D. for the request)
  • The Shortcuts, Register, About, and New Version windows will now appear above the other ancillary windows when they are displayed. (Thanks, Ian D., for the tip)
  • [Mac version, PiP] The Picture-in-Picture window will now remember its size and position from run to run. Clicking the Reset button will no longer move and resize the PiP window to the top left.
  • The movie resolution is now displayed in the info area of the Main Window.
Bug Fixes:
  • Miscellaneous bug fixes
