Also - I've seen a "basic" model, and a "basic w/wide angle lens" model...

Is the basic suitable for a rear-facing dash cam, or do I need to make sure it's wide-angle?

I use a Mobius with C2 lens in the rear, and it works great

Sorry for sounding like a novice, but I've seen a C1, C2, C3 lens, wide-angle, normal lens, V2 and V3.

I've no idea what I'm looking for! only that I want it to be used as a clear as day, HD, rear facing car cam

I am somewhat challenged with this technology, but you can change to wide angle or normal in msetup. My experience is that the field of view is indeed wide angle. No comparison in this respect to my original A lens. The Mobius thread would be a great resource for you.
