Looking through eBay at all the different dash cam options, I'm bugged that you're forced use an all-in-one unit if you want HD video and that none of these can cleanly support additional cameras.

Looking at the 'professional' setups used by law enforcement, it seems that they're using a standard IP camera with what looks like a small windows embedded computer hidden in the trunk.

I like the high quality and reliability of an IP camera, along with being able to take advantage of available add-ons like lenses and remote control capabilities. I don't like the cost, power consumption, and maintenance of a car PC.

Has anyone tried using one of these simple standalone network DVRs to run an IP camera as a dash cam?

Assuming you used an SSD or SD to SATA adapter, it looks like you could even keep a setup like this running while parked overnight. I also like that some of these units also let you tie in an analog camera (so you could record from a built in rear view camera)

Any thoughts?

Time for an update:

I looking at this SD Card to SATA Adapter:

I'm a little concerned about the performance of an SD card, even with a Class 10. Has anyone had experience with their SD card being unable to handle the HD video stream from their camera?

I've been using my FHD (I think it's around 9mpbs stream), and a HD cam with 15mbps (inefficient compression) for an hour worth of driving each day for like 4 months now, no issues at all. Most people say it will take a couple years before an SD card degrades enough to be unusable considering it takes 5 hours to fill up a 32Gb card and the thousands of rewrite cycles the SD card is rated for.
The russians have been using them for years and it seems to work for them. :)

Police dashcam videos look like they're made with analog cameras, even today. :D I think they're meant to be very reliably and sturdy, and connected to various speed and other telemetry showing the car's light's and brake status, rather than HD.
