The E360's rear camera is compatible with the E2
 
Nice to know it works with E360... Going to need to get a LTE module then.

Well, I bought the LTE module, and it will NOT work with my Nexus4pro. :-( I'll try it with the e360 before and try to remember to come back here to let y'all know. If it doesn't, I'm returning ALL of the vantrue stuff and going back to the drawing board to find good cameras for all of our vehicles. I really had high hopes for vantrue, but I'm finding it to be quite a letdown so far, primarily because of the failure of the cellular module to let me keep tabs on my vehicles when I'm out of view of them. The cameras seem to be decent enough, and both the e360 and 4pro play nicely with DashCamViewerPro EXCEPT for the 4pro's rear camera not being supported. sigh. In this regard, the e360 is a winner for the convertible. I just wish it had twice the resolution and more clarity.

The maker of the software will make support for it in a matter of days most often.
personally i do not use any dedicated dashcam player software, CUZ i know where i drive or can tell by video so do not need a arrow on a map.

I’m afraid the N4 Pro does not support the LTE module, but the E360 does. Before trying it with the E360, could you please check the firmware version on your device? If it is not E360_VT-EDK271, we recommend updating it first. You can find the firmware and instructions at this link: https://www.vantrue.net/Support/detail/id/282.html.
 
The 1080p camera is in need of an update.
I still see rear camera as secondary, BUT ! Never the less it should be a 1440p one.
Then again i also said parking guard on a 1 hour timer was fine, and then my parked car was hit 2 hours after i parked it.
 
It uses two IMX675 sensors, which are 2592 pixels wide, a little over the standard 2K resolution of 2560x1440.

2592 * 2 = 5184 pixels width, which if you round it up just a little = 5.2K

Presumably there is a little lost to overlap between the sensors, and a little more lost to de-warping, but since 4K is normally only 3840 pixels width, calling this 5.2K seems reasonable. 5K would probably be a better description.

Is it going to have stabilisation when used on a selfie stick?
Normally you loose some resolution to stabilisation, but with a 360° view, you don't.


Resolution = "5.2K (5184*1944P)", if 5184 is 360° horizontal, presumably 1944 is 135° vertically, so not a true 360 cam like the insta360, but plenty for most purposes.

The A229 plus front camera has 2560 (H) pixels and a viewing angle of 140 degrees (where did the 32 pixels go when the (H) spec for IMX675 is 2592?)

So can we say the E360 "equivalent" resolution to the A229 Plus FOR THE SAME VIEWING ANGLE is 2592(140)/210 = 1728 (H) pixels? 🤔
Therefore we give up a little resolution for the benefit of a wider viewing angle.

The A229 Plus has a circular lens with a FoV of 140°, so that is approximately 140° diagonal viewing angle of a rectangular image, the sensor image will have a diagonal FoV a little less than that. I assume your 210° for the E360 is the horizontal viewing angle of the image, not the diagonal? So you are comparing different things.

The figure you want for the A229 Plus is the horizontal image FoV, which is 102°, if we compare that with the 210° for the E360, assuming these are equivalent figures, then clearly the A229 Plus has over twice the pixels per degree, and given that license plates are two dimensional, that means well over four times the pixels per plate, over four times the detail.

Therefore we give up a little resolution for the benefit of a wider viewing angle.
You give up a lot of resolution for over twice the viewing angle.

Edit: You don't need 210° + 210° viewing angle, you only need 180° viewing angle since the rest is on the rear sensor, and the A220 Plus has 102°, which is well over half of 180°, so you don't actually get twice the viewing angle!

More importantly, by the time a license plate is close enough to read on the E360, if you are moving at any speed then it is likely to be motion blurred, while the A229 Plus can read it at over twice the distance, which results in a lot less motion blur, and far more chance of reading plates while moving.

A 360° view is nice to have, but I think it is best as an additional camera, not as your main camera,. We will see what people think when they test it...

For some reason Viofo don't use the extra pixels that are available on the sensor, I think purely to get a standard 2K resolution that perfectly fits on a 2K monitor. It is possible that the lens is not wide enough to use them anyway.

I'm not sure why Sony put those extra pixels on the sensor, but they do.

Personally, I am considering the E360 for installation in a minibus mainly for work in parking mode, and for monitoring passengers while driving.
I also like the ability to use the E360 as an action camera. For example, when fishing.

Yes, there are uses for 360 views, but for dashcam use, I do wonder if we would be better off with the main front camera providing the normal 110° (4K), and having the interior camera providing the remaining 250° instead of the E360's 210 + 210 = 420, since you would then get about 3x the detail in the image.

There is still the possibility of stitching the two cameras together, even if it doesn't result in a perfect 360 rotatable image - the imperfections are at the A-pillars, so don't matter.

Wow this is a great idea, Vantrue are you listening? Although I have to wonder if the designers had some other constraints we don't understand. This optics technology is challenging.

I guess I don't understand FoV vs diagonal viewing angle. I'm getting dizzy reading these articles:

I got the 210° from Vantrue marketing literature stated as follows:

E360 dash cam achieves 360-degree panoramic recording using a unique 210°+ 210°view angle and dynamic image stitching technology. This ensures a clear, distortion-free image that captures all sides of the vehicle without blind spots, enhancing security while driving and parking.

The 360° is clearly measured horizontally, so you will have 180° per lens.
To stitch the front and back together, you need some overlap, so I assume the 210 is also measured horizontally, but it might be diagonal.
Most dashcam specifications specify the lens angle, but the lens is circular, so this isn't the same as horizontal because to record a rectangular image, you need a bit more to fit the diagonal than you do for the horizontal - Pythagorus.

That is measured horizontally, so does compare to the 360°, and 180° per lens.
 
Has anybody asked VIOFO why there is a 38° difference between Panzer's measurement and their specification?

Let me go see if I can find it.
