Viofo A119s changes

According to our test, the IMX291 is more brighter, of course we also use narrow lens for IXM291 version.
The also depends on the lens, we have tested some lens, some lens didn't make much difference.

Viofo how can you compare A119 and A119S? Is it worth to wait for A119S or just buy A119? ;-) When A119S will be approx available?

It's really hard to say. I go to work morning out of the city, so it's almost half year in night conditions morning. But its also important the day recording for me, because I'm not a bat so drive everywhere else usually in day... I would like to know, if night videos will be much, much more better with IMX291 than with OV4689 and just a little bit worse in day? If loss on the quality of daily recordings will be insignificant on IMX291 or significant. jokiin you are the expert so please let me know also your opinion which night or day performance should be for users more important?

the Sony will offer better low light performance, the OV may do better during the day, the existing model has a few months of firmware development already so may have more of an edge for a while until the Sony version is further developed, if you need a camera right now the regular A119 is still a good choice

I'm also more or less waiting for the A119s offer. I wouldn't say that a daytime image quality "pixel peeping" should be the decision factor. I would rather say that a significantly improved (i.e. more usable) night time performance should make the difference. Other things to consider are usually primarily the price difference (resp. price/performance ratio) and FoV. Hard to talk about reliability, but it could be that Viofo could implement some "corrections" based on experience from A119.

So the questions to have personally sorted out are:
1. Is the night time performance of A119 acceptable or do I need it better?
2. Isn't the 160 deg FoV of A119 too wide for me? Wouldn't the 135 deg of A119s better for license plate recognition?
3. Does the price of A119s justify the differences? How much $ do I really want to spend? Wouldn't I have/want to buy another dashcam in 1-2 years?

... and come on with that CPL!

Give us some date of planning release please... We want to tear out pages from a calendar ;-).

It seems daytime video on A119S also better, will do some comparison again in these days.

New week, new day, maybe new info? :)

Yup yup. Waiting here as well. Hoepfully A119 doprs in price when the A119S comes out. And will be interesting to see pricing when Version 2 of A118C comes out, if it ever does!

the A119S is more expensive, that won't make the A119 any cheaper, it already sells for very low profit so I can't see it getting cheaper just because a higher cost one comes out

A118C V2 @viofo has already confirmed will have a similar retail price as the old model, the cost is higher so you probably won't see it as cheap as the old model and anyone that has the old model still in stock will possibly discount that to clear them out

So do you happen to know why there is a V2 of the A118C? I thought the A119 was the replacement version.

Or is it to counter all the copy units out there?

as cheap as the A119 is there are still people that won't spend that sort of money that still want a cheaper option, an improved A118 is just to satisfy those users, it can be improved so why not, it will also help distinguish which is the real one and which is the copy, as you might have noticed from the feedback the copy A118 isn't that great and it tarnishes the model to have people thinking they're buying the better one but getting something different due to dodgy sellers that only care about profits

I am liking there are various models in different price range. The A119 is pretty good already in day and night mode. Can't wait to see the A119S.

Also glad the A118 can be made better. Hope the night mode can be enhanced. The day mode is already pretty good.

that's pretty much where you'll see the most improvement, the original (and too wide) f/2.8 lens was always holding this model back from performing better

The firmware is update to the latest SDK now, we will do new testing soon.
Not many car dash cams use IMX291 yet, so Novatek still improve the IQ, good to sync to latest SDK.
Also we will check another new lens, will do a final comparison to make decisions for the lens.

Fantastic! I wonder how long before V2 A118C hits the market.

I just held off buying the A119 so will wait for the A119s and A118C V2! Hoping development goes well so we can see this on Amazon soon enough.

Reading the @viofo posts about lens testing a lot I have more respect for them because right now I understand that cameras with same specs can offer different quality just because of the lens. I hope they will find good lens and keep their lens source secret, because can be very possible that the only thing will make difference between Viofo and others to be just the lens. If they will become lens specialists, I will buy their products forever.

enjoy,
Mtz
