Viofo, let’s go! A229 Pro 3-Channel Dash Camera review (+ RTC300 telephoto review & Vantrue Nexus 4 Pro shoot-out!)

If the car has black dotted area at the top of the windshield and you can mount the Viofo camera mount, there is no dashcam less visible than Viofo because the only visible part is the lens part and for Viofo the lens part is at the very bottom at the camera. This matters too. I don't know which other form factor can have a lens at the right at the bottom end.
Being cylinder, all camera part is visible, except some cars with black dotted area where you can mount a side of the camera on the black dotted area and let only the lens visible. But that Vantrue is just big and that stupid big shinny lens area is making it more visible.

Well, yes and no. The Viofo would look less visible on the black dotted area, but would be invisible to me because the rear view mirror is in the way of my view from the driver seat, also the rear view mirror would obstruct the rear facing camera. Besides, I already have my BlackVue mounted there.

If I were to make a suggestion for a future model, I would go for a small clamp for the roof liner with a ball pivot so the camera could be angled in different directions. The connecting cable would not need to be more than 6 inches.

The big round part surrounding the lens... yeah... I get you on that, but it does become less noticeable when covered with a CPL.

This wouldn't work very well. The headliner is flexible and not stiff. It would likely cause vibrations visible in the video.

Possibly, well then, on an sticker for another part of the glass, the review mirror or even the side column?

Totally get it but its a compromise all around between fitting the hardware in and the form factor. Dashcams don't have the most efficient chipsets and heat dissipation, otherwise they'd be in smaller bodies. Can't have it all I suppose...

People are hiding the dashcams behind the rear view mirror just to not see them.
Viofo A229 does not have rear facing camera.
We dont care you already have a dashcam where it should be mounted the Viofo. Having another dashcam already installed is not a part of the idea when creating a dashcam. A dashcam is not created to avoid conflict with another dashcam which is already installed.
If you want clamps, balls and pivots, go to buy another dashcam. I am sure Viofo will never create such thing.

How very polite of you.

Also it is not polite to come here and troll a dashcam.
1. the front camera does not have an interior pointed lens , so you can mount it anywhere, the rear view mirror is not obstructing any lens.
2. if you want a new dashcam just remove the old dashcam. I don't see a reason why to keep two dashcams recording on the front of the car. And more than that, you don't want to move your old dashcam if you really want to keep two dashcams.
3. for your setup only Viofo is to blame: rear view mirror obstructing, no place to mount because of old camera, missing clamps, pivots and balls so you can keep the old camera.

I watched this video from The Hook Up (
) thought it was really well done. Was narrowing it down to the Viofo A229 Pro 3CH, and Vantrue N4 Pro 3CH. For different reasons, the end of the video ranked the 4 cameras based on priority. I messaged him specifically from a rideshare driver perspective and he said to go with Vantrue N4 Pro 3CH. I read your stuff and I lean towards the Viofo A229 Pro 3CH. The A329 seems to be too big of a jump. I would primarily use 2 channel for daily use, then turn on the cabin camera when needed. I do like the idea of the swivel in case theres an interaction through the driver side window, but that would be a nice-to-have, not an essential. Do you agree with his testing and recommendation of going with Vantrue N4 Pro 3CH, or do you recommend A229 Pro .. or wait until the spring release as per CES 2025?

He has my opinion, but I'd have to say in my experiences, Viofo has the best video quality and plate capture hands-down. Vantrue has the nicer looking video when you play it back, but when it comes to the details, Viofo is my number one pick.

The downside to the A229 Pro interior camera is that it's a separate unit rather than the integrated one in the Nexus 4 Pro. But it is a far better sensor than the interior in the Nexus 4 Pro so you should take that into consideration.

Apparently there is a three channel version of the A329 coming, but I'd say that the A229 Pro if you're on a budget , is the better of the three that we've talked about it here.

Which has better licence plate and facial detail with still pics? I assume no one cares about clarity while a video is playing per se, as long as they can pause and screen capture with better quality for "evidence" later.
I don't believe people play back of an entire Endgame-length clip. hahaha

The other characteristic was battery drain for parking mode, especially in the Alberta winters. OBD vs hardwired?
The video didn't test and compare the with the A229. I asked in their comments. Thoughts?

Viofo for the plate captures

Don't have scientific figures for you on the parking mode for either sorry

ODB and hardwired should be the same time, it's just power from the car's battery albeit through a few fuses.

AliExpress are having a sale on at the moment, on both the Vantrue E1 Pro and the one-channel Viofo A229 Pro. Who would have thought we would be seeing fantastic 4K Starvis 2 dashcams at this low a price point.

Although the Vantrue E1 Pro is cheaper, it is hard to pick a winner between the two. The Viofo has a slower UI, but also has the higher bitrate and option for two or three channel expansion, and the wedge form factor.

The Vantrue has a faster UI, a cuter cube form factor and more pleasing video processing. But has a lower bitrate (no slouch though) and admittedly lower support lifespan through firmware updates.

Picking a winner between the two is a tough choice but ultimately who wins?

The customer. You can't go wrong with either 🙂

E1 can do Cloud
What is 'lower support lifespan through firmware updates' ?

Not supported by firmware updates as long as Viofo. Viofo tends to support their models even a few years later with updates, Vantrue does not for the most part.

Thanks @viofo and @VIOFO-Support for the firmware update for the rear camera of the A229 Pro.

I see there's a new firmware version for the A229 Pro Tele.

The firmware versions are different though - so is the A229 Pro Tele a revised new hardware model? Or is it just the same as the older A229 Pro but packaged with the same RTC300 telephoto? @viofo @VIOFO-Support
