One of the most common issues reported by dashcam users is an "SD card error" or "Please format SD card" message. In many cases, the dash cam itself isn't the problem—the memory card has simply reached the end of its usable life. Unlike phones or digital cameras, dash cams continuously record and overwrite footage in a loop. This means the microSD card is subjected to constant write cycles every day, making it one of the hardest-working components in the system.

1. Using a standard microSD card instead of a High-Endurance card​

Many standard microSD cards are designed primarily for photo storage or general consumer devices. While they may work initially, they are not optimized for continuous video recording.
Dash cams benefit from cards designed specifically for this workload, offering:
  • High write endurance
  • Stable sustained write performance
  • Better resistance to prolonged high-temperature operation
 

2. High temperatures accelerate SD card degradation​

During summer, the interior temperature of a parked vehicle can become extremely high. While the dash cam itself may continue operating normally, the microSD card is often the component most affected by prolonged heat exposure.
Continuous recording combined with elevated temperatures can significantly reduce the card's service life.

3. Higher-resolution recording places greater demands on storage​

Modern dashcams recording at higher bitrates generate substantially more data than earlier models. Features such as:
  • 4K recording
  • Dual-channel or triple-channel recording
  • HDR video
  • Parking surveillance
All increase sustained write activity, placing additional stress on the microSD card. Cards not designed for continuous recording often experience reduced reliability under these conditions.
 

4. Regular formatting is often overlooked​

Many users install a microSD card once and never perform maintenance afterward. Periodic formatting helps maintain recording stability by refreshing the file system. Without occasional formatting, issues such as the following may become more common over time:
  • File system fragmentation
  • Corrupted sectors
  • Reduced write stability

5. Flash memory quality matters more than advertised read speed​

Not all microSD cards use the same type of NAND flash memory.
For dash cam applications, endurance and sustained write reliability are generally more important than peak read performance. Some cards prioritize lower manufacturing cost or maximum capacity, while others are specifically engineered for continuous write cycles and long-term durability. Choosing a card designed for high-endurance recording can make a noticeable difference in long-term reliability.

Many apparent "dash cam failures" ultimately trace back to a worn or failing microSD card rather than the camera itself. Selecting an appropriate High-Endurance card and following basic maintenance practices can significantly improve recording reliability and help maximize the lifespan of both the storage media and the dash cam system.
 
All else being equal (something that can't be guaranteed) a card that is twice as big will last twice as long since each cell will be written half as often.
Another thing that affects reliability is the power used by the card. Unfortunately there is seldom a specification for this, but a card that uses more power will run hotter.
