Viofo A119 Car DVR factory sample tests

Yes, I was speculating. I didn't expect an official answer regarding future versions before the first is released.

I was wondering if a higher pixel 16m sensor would be better for a frame capture and crop to see license plate numbers better in finer detail.
You have to realise when you are talking about the sensor's 16mp mode, it is about taking still photo pictures. You don't get that resolution when shooting video, which is what we all will be doing when using as a car dash cam. In Full HD (1080p) mode the frame captured will only have 2mp resolution, so it is not going to give you sharper image to see the license plate numbers.

OK, thanks for that explanation 🙂

One other thing though... Higher frame rates usually mean less motion blur so you'll be more likely to be able to grab a license plate if you step through it frame by frame. Of course at night a camera will usually not have enough light to do a full 60fps so most will automatically start doubling the frames or actually lowering the frame rate to get decent quality video.

Interesting because I was willing to forgo framerate (keep it at 30) in order to get higher resolution images. But I might be better off at 1080/60 than 1440/30?

Price and availability od A119 without GPS? I hope it will cost as Xiaoyi car

I am betting it will cost about double the price of current A118c.

I expect it will cost just a little under $90.

@Mtz, is this a your opinion or Viofo told you that price?

Question about video comparison with Xiaomi: which settings did you use in Xiaomi? Is it 1080p@30, 1080p@60 or 2396@30? Looking at your video it seems 1080p@30 ...

By the way, I think Xiaomi is darker when cloudy because I think it only uses 2 apertures: 1.8 and 1. So when it's night it automatically uses 1.8 (big aperture), during the day it use 1. But when it's cloudy it should use 1.4 but it's not available and it still use 1 so too few light for cmos and darker images.

Dashcams don't have adjustable apertures like normal cameras - if you disassemble the lens you'll see it's a fixed unit.

Exposure times and ISO are adjusted electronically by the sensor and DSP combo.

From http://www.xiaoyi.com/yicarcam/features.html using Google Translate:

"Lens aperture determines the maximum amount of light, the greater the amount of light, the better the performance in low light conditions. Lens aperture size small ants smart tachograph used as F1.8, showing the relative aperture of the lens aperture is 1 / 1.8. Theoretically, the maximum amount of light into each doubling difficult to design, weight and manufacturing costs will exponentially enhance the multiples. Resulting in two maximum aperture're just a half-speed gear, the price difference of several times."

This english is worst than mine. Does it mean there are 2 apertures or a fixed one? Maybe some chinese user can help to translate this point ...

the lens is fixed aperture, fixed focus, will be something that got lost in the translation, or just plain wrong, a great deal of Chinese marketing is totally wrong, nothing unusual about that

I have the recordings at 1080p 30fps because I used 4 cameras for video comparisons and one of them can have max. 1080p 30fps. And if somebody is asking for original videos I like to offer the truth which is showing that I am correct.

@Mtz: I'm absolutely sure you are honest tester. I trust you. I asked that because if you record 1080p@30 and not at 2304@30 Xiaomi could appear not so good as it is. This is for 2 reasons: less pixel and less bitrate. At 2304@30 Xiaomi use a 20 mbs bitrate and vbr codec and it could perform much better in low light conditions where plate reading is hard for any dashcam. I wish I can see both dashcams working at max resolution and max bitrate. By the way, Viofo support 2304 resolution or only fullhd@60?

The actual beta firmware of A119 can record at 3 resolutions:
QHD 30FPS
FHD 60FPS
FHD 30 FPS

QHD is 2K (2560x1440) and bitrate is 20mbps.

I will do also a QHD comparison test between XiaoYi and A119, I need a little better weather and new month of internet personal usage which is starting tomorrow for me.

enjoy,
Mtz

Thank you Mtz! Real a great test! 2560x1440 of Viofo vs 2304x1296 of Xiaomi. Bets accepted 🙂

Please night videos ...

Do you think it's possible to achieve 2560x1080@60fps or 45fps via a firmware update or something? This would be ideal.

This chipset is not offering your requesting resolution and FPS. Also I like very much the 2560x1080 resolution, I would use it all the time in all my videos but I think is not possible because of NT96660 chipset. The 45FPS I consider not so important because it already have 60FPS for FullHD. Also I remember I did a lot of tests with 0806 and the 45FPS was not better for my eyes compared to 30FPS and I considered it only a marketing FPS

Please night videos ...

Viofo video was resized down from 1440 to 1296 to match the Yi resolution so I can compare both in just one video.

Please add a link to the raw file. On YouTube I can only download the "double fullhd" version, that is 1920 x (1080 + 1080)
