VIOFO A119S Modified Firmware MODs Archive

See my video from yesterday evening with MOD-6Vf Sharpness Normal.
WDR off, after about 1.30min I mute the sound.
I'm not really satisfied with the quality, it's not even possible to view the license plate numbers.
Any recommendations?

File sized increased in comparison to original FW 2.61 from ~295MB to ~375MB

I have no CPL attached

Name a dashcam that can read license plates in that conditions: night and speed. There is no dashcam that can do this at the moment.

Great 6Vf night footage, all low light plate readability is greatly affected by directional light angles. If your vehicle has bright headlights or second pair of Extreme Driving Lights at the same level as case vehicle plates it will reflect only white. Try the same test without Driving Lights on. Also note your right headlight is misaligned and aimed too high or your high-beams were on. When CPL is removed the image is brighter causing even more plate blown-out white. thanks for sharing clips set to 1min to reduce size.

It's automatic full beam in combination with multibeam led. So everything is correct with the headlights. But thank you that you are so carefully.

You are satisfied with the result? OK, nice, so I have no duty to improve the installation.

Do you recommend a CPL for the day?

By the way : greetings from Germany and thanks for your effort.

Suggest all Dashcams always keep CPL Filter on day and night.
If the vehicle high intensity multi-beam headlights are too bright and you *must* have plate readability at night you can pull fuse for second light set or disconnect the lamp plugs or blackout 25% of light lens cover. Its a very common complaint with new Dashcam owners when reviewing night footage.

Almost night with and without street lights. It was darker for human eyes.

Well, i think this MOD has the best night time for A119S ever. But my taste needs just a little bit more sharpness, for day time mostly.
Excellent 6Nr sharp60 day and night footage, agreed your Lens benefits from very strong sharpness, its compensating for slightly weak center focused Lens. The street light off/on comparison is very interesting, A119S adjusted amazingly well to increased light level, played it back 5 times to see it change. great choice of test clips, we are almost at Stable version, thanks for sharing, well done!

Shocking A119S 6Vf footage speeding 228 KM/h, suggest deleting this footage from public display unless you're on the Autobahn with no speed limits. If sharpness is Normal 57 you have a perfectly center focused Lens, suggest leave CPL on.
Almost ready to release an improved Stable 6Vh which everyone agrees is the BEST so far. Thanks for sharing this high speed footage.

Sharpness should be 60 according to the firmware.
Ok, I deleted the video. But we have no speed limit at this section of the highway.

I have no CPL at the moment, but consider to buy one.

Wanna see some more videos or just with new beta firmware necessary?

If possible send me short 1min or less video using 6Vf Sharp Normal & Strong.
If that high speed clip was Strong level your Lens is acceptable, image improves using Strong Sharpness for some owners, mine works best at Sharp58.
Many Countries enforce highway speed limits so posting your own illegal speeding footage can be used against you. If that section of road is Mad MAX zone then nothing to worry about, better idea to disable GPS speed/info data stamp or disable GPS.

Which Lens do you have 1 or 2? If Lens2 you must buy A129 V2 CPL Filter.

It's standard sharpness of the MOD-6Vf firmware. I guess 60.
But I can try to compare with normal and strong and 1min clips.
Which conditions? Traffic on the highway with speedlimit - approximately 100-120km/h?

It's one of the first V2 cams, so I guess it's lens 1.
The new cam has lens 2. I'm trying to find out which is better for me. Seems lens 2 has wider range as mentioned in the other thread.

Do you see a risk Killing the cam with the high Bitrate? Especially in hot summers like this year?
Of course I tried to open the holes for circulation of air, like in one of your YouTube clips.

Bit Rate over 27.5Mbps during hot summer in Countries like Australia, India, Philippines may cause over-heating. Suggest using 24-26Mbps MODs.
Record short 30sec-1min clip Sharpness Normal/Med then Strong/High city streets or parking lot showing parked cars and buildings, need that for Focus assessment.
If you own 2 dashcams with different Lens indicate which clip its from. From earlier footage focus looks acceptable.
Lens2 is widest angle VIOFO has ever used.

Ok I thought I would start with a drive through our local park Minimal lights just headlights.
I wanted to see how far in front the camera can see and what noise was in the video ( Not my sad music !! I forgot to MUTE when setting it up ) I think it coped very well with just headlights .

Few clips from today.

1080p@30fps - WDR Off - EV 0 - CPL - 60Hz - Lens 2 (129)

Soft Sharpness
Noon - Cloudy Highway
Afternoon - Sunnyish Parking Lot

Normal Sharpness
Evening - Parking Lot

Maybe it's my monitors or my eyes, but under both sharpness settings, outlines and edges on buildings, poles, cars/doors, have a sort of shimmering effect going on. The picture is clear, but not really crisp.

Great 6Nr Beta night footage, this is probably the best low light IQ we'll ever get from A119S until Contrast control is found. Dark park test is very good, better than expected probably due to Hoya CPL Filter, really like that illuminated Bridge! thanks for sharing these clips.

IQ Testing by DCTeam and numerous minor adjustments produced an excellent modified firmware version.
The only changes could be
+1 Brightness (but will increase grainy night and brighten daytime white color)
+1 Strong Sharpness from 60 to 61 (benefit weak center focus Lens owners)
-2 Edge Detection from 146 to 144 (not as crisp but less halo)
+2 Edge Detection from 146 back to 148 (crisp with more halo, to compensate change lowest Sharpness range from 57-58-60 to 56-58-60)
I vote no further changes and create 22 / 24 / 26 Mbps BitRate Stable versions 2/4/6Vh now. Can always create Custom MODs later for those wanting adjustments for Lens issues.
on second thought, we'll try 6Ns = Edge148 and verify crisp vs halo.

Very good 6Nr soft + normal footage, there is some halo edge effects in both clips since neither is truly soft which was 56 and dropped. Agreed image doesn't pop, to increase crisp image must increase edge detection but that will also increase halo which is already visible. Could increase or decrease Edge Detection +/-2

Created new A119S - Beta Revision 6Ns , See post #1 of thread for details and ChangeLog.

Welcome to Wacky Weekend MODs !!
Request footage & feedback on Sharpness and Saturation under all lighting conditions.
Extreme adjustments made to Edge Detection from 146 to 158 and Saturation from 124 to 118 , all feedback is needed. Always difficult to determine best Sharpness for different Lenses with different focus limited by only three level options.

It seems the video is faltering a bit. Maybe the bitrate is too high?
or is it just my eye?

What sharpness do you recommend?

After that it will be time to test 6Ns I guess.
