VIOFO A119S Modified Firmware MODs Archive

Here is the MOD-6Nc footage taken with sharpness 20 and 60 on the same route almost at the same time.
The difference is obvious, sharpness 60 is too much, 20 looks much better (I might want it even lower).

Settings: 1080p@60fps + CPL + EV 0 + WDR Off + Frequency 60Hz + Sharpness 20

The initial indicators used to select Sharpness 20/40/60 range have been proven correct by your sample footage for 20 & 60.
Clearly demonstrates the difference in 'halo' edges around buildings. At this point we know HIGH 60 is maximum before ugly over-sharpening. LOW 20 looks good and could be considered soft. I purposely created this range to leave MED 40 as Normal but had no actual video, also I made a type-o in the 6Nb firmware and previously set it as 60. MOD-6Nc is the correction with everyones agreement may only require slight tweaks 18/28/58 , 22/42/62 ...
Great results, need more confirmations before making any adjustments.

Here are some stock Beta 4.02 (with the boosted bitrate to 25.6Mbps) night videos. I think we should also make sure that any improvements done to the daytime video also improve night, or at least don't negatively affect it. Testing out a free Mega account as my google drive is starting to get full.

Settings: 1080p@30fps + CPL + EV 0 + WDR Off + Frequency 60Hz + Sharpness Soft

Same Corydon/Osborne streets:

It does appear to use any available light source to brighten the picture relatively well. Any building lights, vehicles on the sides, etc., do help to illuminate the picture of those areas, so the left and right edges do get a decent boost. But there is so much noise over everything. Overall detail is affected badly. The picture isn't too bad as long as you're not moving, or going very slowly, but once you're at any amount of speed, the noise is terrible and the picture falls apart. The image also isn't that much brighter than what 1.01 7Hb is capable of, and video is clear in comparison, both at standstill and when moving.

Is this an exposure and gamma issue? Can a MOD even be done to address this at all?

Here are the night videos from 1.01 7Hb Corydon/Osborne streets for comparison: (some probably have downloaded these already)

Look at the difference! The Beta 4.02 does occasionally get a brighter picture, and the left and right sides are lit a little better with the same light sources, but I think the trade off of introducing so much noise to everything isn't worth it. 1.01 might be a little bit darker, but remains clear, especially in the most important part, which is right in front of your car.

Here are a couple more Beta 4.02 night videos. You can see the picture is a mess when you're moving. Light sources do brighten the picture, but it is still so noisy.

What did they think was so wrong with the settings of 1.01 that it needed to be overhauled completely?
Great footage and suggestions and questions!
Agreed before fine tuning any image values day & night footage must be reviewed. The un-modified footage is too grainy/noisy for my taste but those new Sharpness levels are way out of range.
We probably agree the official v4.02 Sharpness defaults for Soft/Normal/Strong are worthless and abandoned, need more feedback from others using the un-modified levels.
There are ways for MODs to adjust Brightness, Gamma maybe even Contrast, haven't had a chance to adjust the data tables yet, but its the reason old FW v1.01 is so different it was left at basic IQ levels. We've been changing Image Quality from both ends, Old vs New. Reviving v1.01 without Hot-Pixel mapping may end up being more important than we realize. The jump from v1.01 to v1.20 was big for IQ changes, its not all bad, the levels just need tweaking, or give the controls to End User.

This clip really shows me the Flaw in the Lens Left Side Focus! The gas Station on the left is really fuzzy while the white cargo van and mustang on the right are alot clearer.
I know this is not the fault of the firmware but an ongoing issue with this camera it was also tilted down a click from where I previously had it and it shows more interior on the windshield and dash and hood.

I'll probably revert this cam back to official release firmware for further comparisons. Comparisons can hardly be apples to apples here with the flaws of this cam and the entirely different lens on the new camera. Also I only have the one CPL filter and having one with and one without seems to skew the results a bit as well and in my vehicle the CPL is a must.

This is the Old Cam NO CPL Mod 5e firmware
1080p60
WDR=Off
Ev=0
60hz

Forgot to add the Clip of the New Camera from same time!
Recommend you contact VIOFO and send them link to your post with this footage, its unacceptable and you should get a new A129 Lens module sent out as replacement so both Cams have the same for future valuable side-by-side comparisons.

Friends who understand the difference in the video do not necessarily do it in motion:

1. Choose a parking place, preferably a large area, the sun behind.
2. We turn on the recorder for recording, we're talking about the recorder's settings in the ear, so do this for all the parameters that will not be confused when compared.
3. All frames are transferred to the PC, we make a stop frame of each parameter, compare, choose the best.
4. Install the new firmware prepared for the memory card, the flashing recorder, setting the smoothing parameters in the first case, we repeat all the same actions.
Postscript It is best to conduct all actions in a short time, so that the overall picture will be maximally possible (clouds, sun, etc.),

everything's default except sharpness=20 + CPL
Rainy night, plaza.
I love the logo, but for some reason it disappears too fast (faster then VIOFO and dice).

Thanks for rainy night footage, more confirmation Beta v4.02 6Nc Sharp Low 20 should be Med/Normal.
With fancier Logos had to develope a more creative image reducing script to maintain quality at the 5.00KB file limit. Improved tiny image quality but removed all meta data, color sampling, reduce brightness, reduced DPI to 70 and increased compression resulting in faster loading. Normally never requested to delay graphic load times. We really need 22.1KB of space to play with.

Somehow not so.
the person is working, doing the firmware, and we have overwhelmed his video files, we need to help, discuss, compare screenshots, talk where better, where worse.
All IMHO.

To be honest, most of the time I prefer not to comment my footage because I can't recognize the difference between files, unless its obvious (like official fw vs MODs, or increased bitrate vs default).
So many factors can affect the video, and it's almost impossible in my case to get the same footage under same conditions..., so when I upload, I hope some one with more experienced eye will see something relevant.

and I provide links to my video for exactly the same reason.

it might help @BCHobbyist to make some adjustments to a MOD used.

Lowering the frame rate might be a good idea even for North America, as more bits will be available for each frame, possibly increasing image quality. Most HDTV sets should be able to cope with these frame rates (I am not sure about PC monitors, though).

Registered to reply here, the 25/50 fps was requested by me,
25/50 fps works, tomorrow I'll test drive and add a video here.
Is 20 in "Sharp 102030" the same as 20 in "sharp 204060"?

On second thoughts, 25/50 might not be a good idea, since pc monitors are using 60fps and these clips are mostly watched on pc.

@Koganiz Not too shabby! Now, we have to decrease Saturation one step, whatever that means.
I think Sharpness 10 is normal; we might try Sharpness values like 00/10/20 or 05/10/15, in order to have both softer and sharper settings available for users.

Welcome Sir, to the DashCamTalk Forum.
By making that request for EU frame rates, you have provided a new level of support, I am in your debt.
