VIOFO's A119S

Good to know the Viofo's lens-rotation limitation. I will probably end up with one or two of those mounting in a non-standard way as well. Needing the low-light performance and liking the price- and now I know my idea will work :D

Thanks!
Phil

The subwoofer in the boot is overpowering the A119S's microphone in the rear. Please mute the audio if you don't want to listen to a persistent thump.

Nice. Mobius seem to have wider FOV., brighter but have more light flare. Great job @harsh.

Though I like the undistorted and closer view the A119S captures, it misses more than a bit on the sides. Pros and cons of each are inevitable.

Going to turn the exposure on the M1 down a bit and see how it fares with tailing headlights, most people here drive with their high beams on full-time, need to find the balance. The 25° tilt mount I was using earlier with the M1 worked better with such exposure.

Footage from the Mobius without streetlights goes pitch black, while the A119S exploits the little illumination provided by the tail lights and records an acceptable view of the road behind. Impressive!

Can see a lot of noise but if that's the trade-off to be able to capture discernible footage when it goes completely dark, so be it!

Very hard to find stretches with zero streetlights, if I do come across one, will post another video.

Thanks @harsh.
The A119S really pick up the low light.

When the A119S was mounted in the front, I'd seen what the footage looked like with headlights turned off at night, gave a fair idea about its capability towards utilisation as a rear camera. Quite pleased with its low-light performance, especially the performance in very low-light and complete absence of streetlights.

Other than the stretches devoid of streetlights, the Mobius 1 performed surprisingly well. The chipset & sensor though dated, still holds relevance if tuned well. Makes me appreciate the M1 a whole lot more. :)

This should do it for the comparison with the M1, will move on to 60 FPS while still mounted in the rear before giving it a rest till a new firmware that includes IQ adjustments or improvements is available.

@harsh Just curious, How come I see your same post (which is quite lengthy) A few times a week. It seems to always be the same. Is someone else posting it?

None of the videos are repeated.

Whilst comparing the A119S with the SG9665GC, I'd posted the videos in a different thread too, you're probably referring to those posts from a couple of weeks back.

:) You may be right.

After noticing a few corrupted files on the SD card a couple of days ago, had formatted the card using the camera's built-in routine and it seemed to have done the trick.

ss.png

Since formatting the card, the camera was working as it should and there weren't anymore corrupt files to be seen, until today.

The A119S booted up normally and did start recording as it should (all files post formatting are there except the last one before it hung), it's only after a few minutes I noticed in the IRVM that the screen was still turned on and looked like the camera was stuck on the start-up logo. Tried restarting but wouldn't go past the logo; with or without the SD card inserted.

While exhibiting this behaviour, the logo stays on for a few seconds on unplugging the Mini USB cable, the screen slowly fades to off once the capacitor is depleted.

Thought probably it could have something to do with the cable or power supply but switching the cables with the Mobius or using a different 2.1 A power supply and cable didn't make any difference.

Resetting the camera via the pin hole button made no difference either.

Using a Transcend 400X 64GB. H2testw doesn't show any errors.

The camera is back in action after reloading the firmware.

Edit: 26/02/17

The above issues are only cropping up when using the 4 metre Monoprice cable in the rear. More in the following post - https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/my-a119s.26309/page-4#post-320061

New Firmware.

F.W V. 1.2
- 1080p @ 60 FPS, WDR - On, CPL - No.

Bitrate -

Evening and night - 20 MB/s

Sunny conditions with a lot of movement - 25 to 40 MB/s

Daytime.

Youtube has messed up the daytime clips royally, download the linked RAW files.

Sunny

Looks like the IQ adjustments included an increase in default exposure values, looks a lot sharper too.

The over-saturation of colours within the yellow-brown range under sunny conditions still remains. Not really an issue if looked at strictly from a dash cam use perspective.

Direct Sun and trees

Too much of dashboard reflections and glare without the CPL.

Nice and bright with the exposure upped. The contrast also looks like it's been tweaked.

The grain that appeared on dark patches seems to greatly reduced, mounting it back in the rear will give a clearer picture. 30 FPS being duplicated/doubled.

the extra frame each 6th frame is to make up the difference between 25fps/50Hz frequency to work with 30fps frame rate, it's one method of handling the frequency setting without limiting exposure rates to a multiple of 30
