VIOFO's A119S

the extra frame each 6th frame is to make up the difference between 25fps/50Hz frequency to work with 30fps frame rate, it's one method of handling the frequency setting without limiting exposure rates to a multiple of 30

Good to know. Thank you!

So that means it's only dropping down to 30 FPS and doubling in very low-light conditions. :)

not sure what they are doing and when but there are a number of ways of handling this and there are various reasons for choosing one method over another depending on what they want to achieve

@jokiin Would you share some information on how the dynamic range is being extended with the IMX291.

sorry, not sure what you're asking exactly?

I'd gone through the IMX291 spec sheet linked on your website. The part about WDR, would you care putting it in simpler terms.

the multiple exposure functionality is not something we use for video, it's good for photography but we don't use the photo functionality in our cameras anyway, it's the same sort of function that the Mobius 2 was using with their WDR initially which proved to be too problematic for video use

The description made me believe that a method similar to bracketing was being employed to extend the dynamic range. Guess not.

Thank you.

Youtube's encoding does degrade the quality from a bit to totally ruining it (especially under direct sun + tree cover), either way to see the original quality one needs to download the linked RAW files.

OFF Topic: Harsh I really enjoyed this video. I wouldn't mind seeing more of your city showing similar footage. Scary how close cars have to pass parked cars with only a few inches to pass bye. I will never complain of Toronto Canada traffic congestion again.:):)

Yup, some of badly parked sedans and SUVs don't leave much room to pass. I'll try to get in some videos of other market areas around here.

After facing the hanging issue again with the A119S whilst mounted in the rear a couple of days back, did some testing using a Charger Doctor, the A119S pulls 0.56 A when connected to the VIOFO supplied 3.5 metre cable and when connected to the 4 metre Monoprice cable, the amperage is capping at 0.47 and the banding + interference on cold starts makes a comeback.

The hanging issue is occurring only when using the 4 metre Monoprice cable.

Also left the A119S plugged into a 2.1 A wall charger over a couple of nights. The unit recorded flawlessly for over 12 hours straight on both instances.

I'm going to peg this one down to the 4 metre Monoprice cable not playing nice with the A119S. Maybe it's the other way around but either way there's definitely a compatibility issue. Using a similar 10 ft Monoprice cable exhibited the same interference and banding when the A119S was initially mounted in the front.

Confusion still ensues as my other dash cams like the SG9665GC, Mobius 1 and Mobius 2 are immune to such issues while using the same cables.

Apologies for what in all probability seems like a false alarm.

Edit:

Original post highlighting the issues updated. Going to keep an eye on this and will report if anything out of the ordinary occurs.

As usual, Youtube's encoding has introduced a lot of macro blocking in the videos below. Download the linked RAW files to view the original quality.

I had an experience with one particular camera that was not happy with a 4 meter Monoprice USB-A to mini-B cable and yet no other camera I've installed in the same location with the very same cable has ever had any problem with the amount of current it receives from the set-up. It was a Mini - 0806. Go figure?

The question arises whether the drop in amperage could be responsible for the camera to hang and also corrupt files when using the 4 metre Monoprice cable.

those have a very poorly designed power supply and are very sensitive to voltage fluctuations, a bit low and the hardware crashes, a bit high and it burns

Yes, that sounds about right. The camera is indeed very sensitive to voltage fluctuations. The charging circuit LED would constantly flicker as if hovering at the fully charged point even if the camera functioned properly. The thing was that it generally worked fine on a shorter cable. Perhaps the A119S is experiencing something similar in its own way? In any event, it is the only camera I've owned that had an issue with the 15 foot Monoprice cable.
